'Sadistic crime network': Human Rights Commission speaks on ammunition trading case in Papua

The head of the Papuan brach of National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) gave the developments about the ammunition trading case in Papua.


On 29th September, Operasi Damai Cartenz Task Force (Satgas ODC) launched an operation to eradicate the practice of buying and selling ammunition. This operation was held in Karubate village, Muara District, Puncak Jaya Regency, Central Papua.

The ODC Task Force is a joint TNI-police force specially established to control security in Papua. One of its missions, is to suppress the Armed Criminal Groups (KKB) affiliated with the Organisasi Papua Merdeka.

The two arrested buyers were Erek Enumbi and Hugon Gire. Two sellers, named as members of the Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS), which is under the military, have not been arrested this week.

Frits Ramandey, Head of the Indonesia's Papuan branch of the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM), praised the move of the ODC Task Force, which he considered showing professionalism and safeguarding state's authority by arresting the irresponsible people allegedly involved in the case.

He asserted that selling ammunition in dark market especially in Papua is not an ordinary crime, it is a sadistic crime.
