In Tara June Winch’s novel “Swallow the Air,” a young Indigenous woman called May takes a journey, trying to escape the pain, violence, racism and poverty in her life. But her journey leads her back to where she started - her family and the country of the Wiradjuri people. Will she stop running?

As part of NAIDOC 2020 celebrations, Indonesian freelance writer Arif Furqan talks about what makes ‘Swallow the Air’ a unique reading experience that deepens our understanding of the 2020 NAIDOC theme, “Always Was. Always Will Be.”
