Meanwhile, residents of the Northern Hemisphere are finding it difficult to come to terms with the reality of the massive fires sweeping across Europe and North America.

Although the advancing flames present a terrifying spectacle as they consume everything in their path, scientists warn that smoke from wildfires can also pose a serious health threat.
