South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that the war in Ukraine must end. He made the comments as he met with Mr Putin in St Petersburg as part of a peace mission with six other African nations.

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that the war in Ukraine must end. He made the comments as he met with Mr Putin in St Petersburg as part of a peace mission with six other African nations.


Prof Greg Barton is a Research Professor and Chair of Global Islamic Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute at Deakin University.

Prof Barton believes that if peace between Ukraine and Russia is to be achieved, we need to understand the motivation and genesis of the attack.

He says that Ukraine is prepared for the long, but he also hopes that some resolution can be found by the end of the year.
