The New Year floods that hit Jakarta this time are bigger than the previous floods and have submerged large areas that were almost never flooded before,

Why is the New Year flood so big? That has caused deep concern.

Although it has often happened, floods in the capital city still has not been  overcome by the central government or the governor of DKI.

It is believed, flooding in Jakarta is one proof, the error of urban planning from the beginning, failure of maintenance of the river upstream and also extreme weather factors.

The following is an interview with Mahawan Karuniasa, a climate expert from the University of Indonesia, Jakarta who is also the Chairperson of the Indonesian Climate Change and Forestry (APIK) network.
