Why do terrorist groups behind the attacks of the early 2000s remain a significant threat in 2020?

On 11 September 2001 terrorists attacked the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York. The response was a war on terror. However, military might itself has not solved the problem.


In the time of COVID-19 terrorist activity has been less prominent in the media but research suggests terrorist groups continue to grow and flourish where circumstances permit.  Greg Barton, Research Professor and Chair of Global Islamic Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute at Deakin University explains why and emphasises the importance of good governance in combatting the spread of terrorism.
