the Belarusian Olympic team has left Tokyo bound for home, however athlete Krystsina Tsimanouskaya was not among them. The sprinter plans to seek asylum in Poland, after alleging that her team's officials tried to force her to fly home, where she feared she wouldn't be safe.

Tsimanouskaya has received a humanitarian visa from the Polish embassy in Tokyo, according to a Polish Foreign Ministry official.

The Belarusian Sport Solidarity Foundation, an activist group that is helping the runner, said she will fly to Warsaw on August 4.

The situation escalated  after Tsimanouskaya made critical comments toward Belarusian officials managing the team in Tokyo, setting off backlash in state-run media back home.

24-year-old athlete Krystsina Tsimanouskaya says her Olympic team tried to remove her from Japan, but she refused to board a flight and instead approached police for help.

In a filmed message distributed on social media, she also asked the International Olympic Committee for assistance.

The athlete, who was due to run in the Olympic 200-metre heats Monday, had criticised Belarus team officials on her Instagram account.

She said she'd been put in the 4x400 metre relay despite never racing the event.

The International Olympic Committee ((IOC)) says it spoke to Ms Tsimanouskaya and she was being accompanied by a Tokyo 2020 staff member at the airport.
