Japan is one of the world's most disaster-prone countries, frequently experiencing earthquakes, torrential rain and other natural hazards. At the same time, the number of international visitors continues to grow, making it increasingly important to ensure foreign travellers have access to timely information and adequate support during emergencies. So what should visitors do if disaster strikes while they're in Japan? And what challenges remain in Japan's support system for foreign nationals? We spoke with Associate Professor Akiyoshi Kikuchi, an expert in disaster preparedness for foreign residents and visitors at Meisei University.
