Keiko Tanaka, an ex national player for the U19 squad with a solid 9 years of experience in the Japan Women's Football League, gave up her job and soccer career to start a new life in Australia.

Keiko Tanaka gave up her job and successful soccer career that spanned 9 years in Japan's top women's league - Nadeshiko League- to start a brand new soccer life in Australia.

Playing abroad was always on her mind, but this time, she was somehow drawn to this country through her various networks. Everything was pointing to the same direction, and Keiko felt that "this was it".

After securing a spot with NPL (National Premier League) NWS Koalas FC in December 2019, Keiko relocated to Sydney in January 2020.

However, just as the season was about to kick off, NPL came to a sudden halt due to the Covid pandemic. In fact, Keiko's team never played a single match before the lockdown came into place.

"I came here to play soccer, and I couldn't play soccer"

Been a temporary visa holder without any government support or adequate income, many international players like Keiko had no other option but to return home.

But for Keiko, her decision was firm, and there was no turning back.

Whilst keeping up with her own training during the lockdown, Keiko began putting together soccer skills video for young players who were also robbed of the opportunity to train and play with their teammates.

Keiko placed emphasis on the detailed and intricate soccer techniques which the Japanese players are often known for. Admitting that English  is not her strength, she purposely spoke only English to make her posts unique.
Keiko has successfully secured a spot with the Gladesville Ravens for the upcoming 2021 season. Her goal is for the team to be promoted into NPL 1, and on a personal level wishes to extend her visa for few more years, until the 2023 Women's Soccer World Cup.
