The High Court has ruled that it is unlawful for the federal government to detain people indefinitely in immigration detention where there is no real prospect they could be removed from Australia in the foreseeable future.

The landmark case reverses a 20-year-old precedent, and paves the way for the release of dozens of detainees still locked up.
