'BUTTER', a Japanese novel based on a real-life incident, has attracted a great deal of international attention. Its author Asako Yuzuki is coming to Australia to give talks at the Melbourne Writers Festival and the Sydney Writers Festival.

Feminism is very important to Ms Yuzuki. She has been writing books in Japan where there is no market for feminist fiction. When 'BUTTER' was translated and introduced to English-speaking countries last year, she was surprised by the response.

A paperback edition of 'BUTTER' was published in Japan in 2020, followed by translated UK and US editions last year. In November last year, Ms Yuzuki became the first Japanese writer to win the Waterstones Book of the Year 2024 award in UK. 'BUTTER' is now being translated in 35 countries worldwide.
