Virgin Australia won the bid to launch the new Brisbane - Tokyo Haneda flights from March 2020.

The International Air Services Commission (IASC) announced on the 29th October that Virgin Australia and Qantas Airways will be allocated one daily flight in each direction between Australia and Tokyo Haneda Airport.

Virgin Australia will launch the new direct route from Brisbane to Tokyo Haneda, which is located closer to the city centre of Tokyo than Narita Airport.  The company will begin operating the flight by 29th of March 2020. It would be the first time for Virgin Australia to launch a flight to Japan.

Qantas Airways has also won the bid to launch a daily service to and from Tokyo Haneda, though it is unclear whether Qantas will choose Melbourne or Sydney.
