Hosei Tsukitei, a well-known Japanese comedian and "rakugo" performer in Japan, held his first solo stage performance in Sydney this month. Rakugo is a traditional style of Japanese comedy involving comic story telling by a solo performer who sits down on the stage. Even though the performer remains seated and uses minimal props such as a fan and a hand towel, they can make people laugh and even cry by utilizing the imagination and life experiences of the audience. Hosei saw rakugo for the first time when he was 39 years old and decided to make a dramatic career change and become a rakugo performer. Now turning 49 next month, Hosei shares his passion towards rakugo and how it changed his life.
