The Pentagon has played down talks between Defence Minister Richard Marles and his U-S counterpart as what they call a "happenstance encounter" and telling Nine news that no official meeting took place. There are renewed calls for a national firearm register in the wake of a man murdering two police officers in the rural Victorian town of Porepunkah. Whistleblower Richard Boyle will soon learn his sentence after exposing unethical debt collection practices at the Australian Taxation Office. News from today's live program (1-2pm).
