Soldiers from the Australian Army have conducted a gun salute in Darwin to mark the 83rd anniversary today of the bombing of the city in 1942. 235 people died when the Northern Territory capital was attacked in two separate raids by Japanese forces, in hopes of stopping the Allies from using it to contest their Timor and Java invasions.
