Roger Pulvers, a Sydney-based writer, playwright, theatre director and translator, has recently directed his first Japanese film titled STAR SAND. Broadcast on the 30th of May, 2017.

The story is set in Okinawa, Japan during the Pacific War and the story unfolds around two deserters, one from Japan and the other is from the US, through the eyes of a 16-year-old girl.

Rogers encounter with Okinawa happened about 40 years ago and that led him to write a novel STAR SAND, which the movie is based on.

Roger explains how the film-making process went and why he thinks deserters are heroes. STAR SAND will be released in Okinawa next month, and in Tokyo in August.
