Tetsuko 'Tess' McKenzie was on her way to the train station on 6 August 1945 to catch a train into central Hiroshima with a friend. By chance, she missed the train — a twist of fate that saved her life. She later married an Australian soldier, moved to Australia, and began a new chapter as one of the country's Japanese war brides. This story was first published in July 2025.
