Western United FC defender, Tomoki Imai has recently committed to playing 3 more seasons with the club until 2024, one of the longest contract a foreign Japanese A-league player has ever achieved.
When Tomoki first arrived in Australia in February 2019, it was only temporary, to fill in the injured players Aaron Calver and Brendan Hamill. However, it did not take long before Tomoki became an integral part of the team, helping the team to end their inaugural season on 5th position.
Tomoki was awarded another year with the club - a season which no doubt has become one of his career highlight, appearing in all 26 matches, making 90 clearances and 46 interceptions.
Tomoki was a dual winner for Western United's "Player of the season" and "Forever West Award" (Fan's player of the season), a reflection of his performance both on and off the pitch.
"To me, the fact that I could maintain my condition and play the season without any injury was important"
Under the numerous COVID restrictions and uncertain scheduling, Tomoki says he placed a lot of emphasis on his fitness, health and condition, doing extra preparations before training and matches, as well as stretching after.
When Tomoki was 25, he experienced a challenging time, unable to play for 1 year due to injury. He dreaded an early ending to his career. However, having pulled through this difficult time, he now knows how crucial self care is, something he has continued over the years.
Tomoki is "super happy" to win two awards, but knows he could not do it without his team mates, staff and the fans.
"I am not a native speaker of English. But Australians are so kind to me. They take time and use easy expression to speak to me"
"So in return, I would like to do the best I can" says Tomoki
"I am very happy for the 3 season contract, its a reflection of my hard work last season"
Tomoki is looking to repeat his stellar season, hoping to play as many matches as possible, but this time aims for the top3 position on the ladder.
"Please look out for my one-on-one defensive prowess, my intensity with the ball, and my physical strength"
