What can we do to encourage people to read and write more? The conversation between the two Japanese bookworms was the start of these awards. Broadcast on the 21st of January, 2020.

Tomoko Wright, the owner of Full of Books a Japanese second-hand book shop in Sydney, and Hitomi Nakanishi, an associate professor at the University of Canberra, had the idea of holding literary awards to encourage people to read more books.  Now the  idea has come into fruition.

Hitomi has been wanting to change the current situation that young people no longer read as much as they used to.  And Tomoko, after having read blogs and posts on social media by Japanese people living in Australia,  was convinced that everyone has a story to tell about their lives in Sydney.

The inaugural Full of Books Awards is open for submissions.  You can submit a short story either in Japanese or English.  The story must be set in Sydney or about the city, but you don't have to reside in Sydney to participate.
