The five person Beechcraft twin turboprop crashed into the Direct Factory Outlet shopping complex on the edge of the airport at about 9am - shortly after take off.

 

Police and firefighters are on the scene and pictures on social media show plumes of black smoke rising from the building.

 

Victoria's police minister, Lisa Neville, says she understands the plane was en route to King Island.
