An imminent Tsunami warning in Japan

An imminent tsunami warning has been issued after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off Fukushima in Japan.

The quake, centred around 250 kilometres north east of Tokyo struck at 6am local time with a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

Residents are being told to evacuate the area off the Fukishima coast immediately with a tsunami of up to 3 metres possible..

Japanese broadcaster NHK is issuing warnings to evacuate.
