Electricity prices to ad $78 a year to energy bills

A new report suggests Australian households should expect electricity prices to ad $78 a year to energy bills from next year because of decisions to close coal fired power stations.

The Australia Energy Market Commission says the closures are partly a response to the changing generation mix in the power system.

It comes as Federal, State and Territory energy ministers are scheduled to meet in Melbourne today. (wed)

Speaking on the ABC, Victoria's Energy Minister, Lily D'Ambrosio criticised the monopoly power companies price gouging when it comes to energy bills.
