Scientists from Monash University have discovered that the roundworm shares a similar gene to humans.

The findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, say the gene controls fat storage in the intestine, as well as regulating sleep after eating.

Associate Professor Roger Pocock says upon removing the gene, researchers made a significant discovery.

Professor Pocock says the discovery could prompt new treatments for obesity.
