Police in Paris have shot a man who shouted "this is for Syria" as he attacked a police officer with a hammer outside the Notre-Dame cathedral.
The attacker was shot in the chest and is being treated in hospital while the police officer suffered minor injuries.
French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb says the police acted quickly. "A person came up behind a policeman armed with a hammer and started hitting him. Another policeman immediately reacted and shot at him. The policeman is recovering in hospital and the aggrressor is injured. The incident is being looked into by a prosecutor as while the aggressor was attacking the policeman he said 'this is for Syria.' "
American tourist Nancy Soderberg was inside the cathedral and says armed police cordoned off the site and asked those inside to sit down and put their hands on their heads.
"The told us that they had to investigate whether there were accomplices. They then came in a made us put our hands up which is that photo I tweeted saying they had to basically walk around all of us. People were, I was impressed at how calm people were and then eventually they said the incident was over and we're permitted to leave,"
