Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott says Australia should join the United States and withdraw from the Paris Climate agreement.

Mr Abbott has also criticised the government’s energy and climate change policies.

Australia signed the deal in 2015 when Mr Abbott was prime minister.

Australia's commitment is to reduce carbon emissions by 26  to 28 percent by the 2030, off 2005 levels.

In a speech delived overnight, Tony Abbott says the economic effects of emissions reductions weren't known upon signing but are now.

"Knowing what we now know, we would not have made the Paris agreement so now that we do know, we should get out of it."
