A security outage in Sydney Airport is causing delays for passengers.

The outage is affecting passport control for international passengers at the airport on Monday morning, according to media reports.

Australian Border Force is aware of the delays but can't confirm what the issue is or how many airports it is affecting, a spokeswoman told AAP on Monday.

Irate flyers have taken to social media to voice their annoyance.

"This is absolutely crazy! I’ve never seen a line like this in my life!" one person tweeted.

Travelers have been advised to allow extra time at the airport because of the delays.

It comes after dozens of flights were cancelled due to strong and damaging winds battering Sydney and southern NSW.

Wind speeds approached 50km/h, while gusts topped 70km/h on Saturday morning at Sydney airport.

Qantas, Jetstar, Tigerair, Rex and Virgin all cancelled multiple flights into and out of the airport in the city's south.
