Labor is "very open minded" on whether the Australian military should be called in alongside police in terrorism situations.

Labor's defence spokesman Richard Marles says global terrorism has changed the way Australia's defence forces act and it makes sense to bring the right capabilities to any given situation.

"These situations are continually changing and continually challenging and we need to be open-minded about how we best manage this," Mr Marles told Sky News on Sunday.
