Hundreds of Stop Adani protesters - waving banners - awaited politicians arriving for the first day of the parliamentary year (February 5).

In a carnival of colours and costumes, bearing banners and waving flags, protesters gathered outside Parliament House on Monday, as politicians returned for the first sitting day of the year.

The group gathered outside Parliament House, calling for the proposed Queensland coal mine to be scrapped.

"This coal must stay in the ground," Greens senator Jordon Steele-John told AAP.

"This is the central issue in relation to climate change at the moment on the Australian political agenda."

Stop Adani Tweed spokesman David Norris has told S-B-S News.. today's protest is the first of many to be held over the parliamentary sitting period.

"The mood was very resolute. There were quite a number of different speakers and I'd say probably around 500 people who sent a very strong message to parliament today on their first day that Adani has got to be stopped."
