A man who allegedly pulled a gun on police officers has died after he was shot in the leg at a home on Sydney's northern beaches.

Police were called to a domestic violence-related incident at a granny flat in Ingleside just after 9.30pm on Saturday and attempted to speak to the 53-year-old man who was allegedly involved.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Julie Boon told reporters on Sunday that the man was armed and pointed the unregistered shotgun at officers.

Police then fired one round at the man's leg, she added.

The 53-year-old was treated for first aid at the scene before he was taken to Royal North Shore hospital in a critical condition.

He died a short time later.

"We are very concerned for the welfare of the three officers involved and appropriate action will be taken to support those police," Ms Boon said.

A critical incident investigation has been launched.
