Sydney hosted its annual fireworks spectacular with the biggest fireworks display the city has ever seen with seven tonnes of fireworks,

Organisers say the Sydney Harbour Bridge was the focal point of this year's display with 20,000 fireworks erupting from the Sydney icon.

Both the displays honoured the legendary artist Prince who passed away in April 2016 and musician David Bowie.

New South Wales Police say they are pleased they made few arrests at this year's new year's celebrations in Sydney.

Officials say more than one million people packed onto Sydney's foreshore to watch the iconic fireworks display.

Assistant Commissioner Nick Fuller says the arrests were mainly to do with heavy alcohol consumption and assaults, including some minor assaults on police officers.

Officials in Victoria say a man has died following a fireworks incident at Hollands Landing east of Melbourne on New Year's Eve.
