Australia's coronavirus death toll has risen to 40, while the Gold Coast has announced it will close some of its most famous beaches after crowds breached social distancing laws.

The national coronavirus death toll has risen to 40 after Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia reported new fatalities on Monday.

The deaths of an 86-year-old man and an 85-year-old man on Sunday brought the NSW toll to 18.
