An Australia-wide hunt could be over for a man accused of deliberately mowing down a mob of fleeing emus with his ute on an unidentified outback road.
The RSPCA shared the video of the mustachioed man maniacally laughing as he counts each emu he runs over, before he appears to turn the camera on his own face.
The sickening vision shows the emus running away from the car.
The animal welfare organisation on Thursday pleaded for help to identify him and is now working with police to follow up on leads. No charges have yet been laid.
RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty says three possible suspects in South Australia, NSW and Victoria were identified.
"We had a number of leads and we are looking into those," he told AAP on Friday.
"At the moment the South Australian one looks the most promising but obviously we can't identify that person yet."
Mr Beatty said it was important the RSPCA acted.
"People must understand that with premeditated animal cruelty like this, the links between that and other forms of violence down the track are well proven," he said.
RSPCA South Australia acting chief inspector Cheryl Doudle thanked the public for their help in providing information but has warned against people naming and shaming alleged suspects on social media.
"This both compromises potential prosecutions, as well as risks incorrectly identifying innocent people," she said.
"The community is understandably outraged and angry about this vision - as are we. But we urge people to please contact the RSPCA or the police if you have any information."
