Former US president Barack Obama is due to arrive in Sydney where he will address the New Zealand-United States Council event.

Former US president Barack Obama is set to touch down in Australia for a private speaking engagement.

Mr Obama has been in New Zealand visiting Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and former leader John Key, and is due to arrive in Sydney on Friday as a guest of the New Zealand-United States Council, which is hosting an event.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Thursday he was due to "catch up and have a chat" with the former president, who is on a week-long tour of Australia, NZ, Singapore and Japan.
