Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has introduced a marriage-equality bill to the lower house in parliament, saying Australia can vote to make marriage equality a reality.

Mr Shorten says he echoes the sentiments of many fellow Australians who cannot comprehend why their children, siblings, friends and neighbours are equal in everything but one.

Greens MP Adam Bandt introduced a similar same-sex marriage bill to parliament a short time later.

The moves come as the Government is expected to reveal details of its same-sex marriage plebiscite tomorrow. (tue)

The question of funding both the yes and no campaigns is high on the agenda.

There are estimates it could be more than 10 million dollars for each side, on top of the estimated 160-million-dollar cost of running the national vote.
