For the first time in 55 years and 27 meetings they defeated Team USA, taking the match 98-94 in a stunning performance at Marvel Stadium.
There were plenty of heroes but it was San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills who was the man for Australia down the stretch, as he nailed the last 10 points of the match in a dynamic display.
Mills would eventually ice the game with one of two from the free-throw line as he rounded out a 30-point performance.
The scenes were truly unbelievable as Mills, Andrew Bogut, Joe Ingles and Matthew Dellavedova were all truly influential.
The last quarter run started when Ingles hit a massive three-pointer over Myles Turner with 3:33 remaining on the clock to give Australia the lead back at 88-87.
They had led 78-76 at three-quarter time but the USA had gone on an 8-0 run to take back the ascendancy. After that it was the Patty Mills show.
After Ingles made his bucket Dellavedova did his thing and proved an absolute pest on defence before Bogut pulled down a vital board and Mills banked in a massive three – it was his fourth of the match.
