Britain officially appoints Tony Abbott a trade adviser, defying waves of opposition

Britain has named former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott as a trade adviser, rejecting complaints from critics that his conservative views about women and gay people made him unfit to represent the United Kingdom.

Australia's former prime minister Tony Abbott says he is pleased to be officially appointed as Britain's trade adviser as the country seeks to negotiate new post-Brexit deals.

"The world especially needs arrangements that boost prosperity at a time like this and I am only too keen to help," he said in a statement.
