Canberra is cleaning up after a freak windstorm wreaked havoc across the federal capital, uprooting trees and leaving thousands without power.

More than 20 teams from the state State Emergency Service will continue with the clean-up on Saturday morning after receiving more than 750 calls for assistance.

However, the SES warned residents to be careful around large trees that may continue to drop branches.

Meanwhile power company ActewAGL said on Saturday 2500 customers still did not have power. On Friday, 16000 customers suffered power outages.

The main areas affected were parts of Aranda Kambah, Spence and Sculling, The Canberra Times reports.
