Commonwealth Bank is looking into customer complaints that problems with some of its merchant payment terminals meant retailers were unable to accept card payments.

Customers were complaining to CBA via social media on Thursday that their Eftpos machines were displaying error messages and that they were experiencing lengthy wait times while trying to speak to the bank's merchant services department.

"We are aware of an issue affecting some of our services," CBA said on Twitter.

"We apologise to our customers affected by this. Rest assured we are urgently looking into this and will have further updates soon."
