In light of this year’s centennial of Korean Provisional Government, a commemorative event was held at the Art Gallery of NSW on April 11.
Around 200 people - government officials, descendants of Korean independence fighters, leaders of the Korean community and business representatives- attended the event organised by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney.
Guests at the reception included Geoff LEE, NSW Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education, Damien Tudehope, NSW Minister for Finance and Small Business, Strathfield state Labor MP Jodi McKay, Canterbury state Labor MP Sophie Cotsis, Michael Spence, University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and Susan Lee, Vice Chairman of Korea Unification Advisory Board in ASEAN.
The event began with a speech by Mr Sang Soo Yoon, Consul-General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney who welcomed guests and provided historical backgrounds of the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government.
The event featured an array of meaningful performances, including Soprano Hyeseoung Hong’s performance and a calligraphy performance by Professor Tae Myung Yeo.
At the venue, photos showing the independence movements were also on display to honor the struggle for Korean independence.
The Korean Provisional Government was established 100 years ago on April 11, 1919, in Shanghai, China. The March 1st Independence Movement served as an important momentum for the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government.
