A feature film ‘Daily Bread’ directed by a granddaughter of Australian comfort woman will be screened at Korean Cultural Centre Australia on 10 August 2019 to mark ‘the Memorial Day for Comfort Women, which is the day in which a Korean comfort woman victim Kim Hak-sun first publicly revealed her ordeal.
‘Daily Bread’ is the first short film directed by Ruby Challenger, the granddaughter of Jan Ruff-O’Herne, an Australian comfort woman.
She produced the film based on her grandmother’s ordeal and experiences as a war prisoner.
She has emphasised “I produced my film in order to raise the awareness of so-called Comfort Women saga in Australia and to keep the past wrongdoings alive in the public eyes.”
At the same time, Ms Challenger says “I would like to build up one voice to help people reconcile with history, not to incite hatred towards a specific ethnic group.”
The screening of the films will take place at 5pm on 10 August(Saturday) at the Korean Cultural Centre AU in Sydney and the light refreshments will be offered for free.
Along with Daily Bread’, another film ‘Apology’ will be also screened in the same evening.
