Defence, energy key focus for Turnbull

The prime minister has made some modest changes to his ministry lineup in a bid to focus the next three years on defence, clean energy and health.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced the new federal ministry.

All previous cabinet members stay in cabinet, but some will have added or different responsibilities.

Greg Hunt will take over Christopher Pyne's old portfolio of industry, science, and innovation.

Mr Pyne will become Defence Industry Minister, which includes oversight of the 50 billion dollar submarine program.

Josh Frydenberg will take Mr Hunt's old Environment protfolio, which is now part of his expanded Energy portfolio.

National Party Senator Matt Canavan has been promoted to cabinet as Minister for Resources and Northern Australia.

Mr Turnbull says the ministry has been picked for the job ahead.
