Despite banning refugee boat arrivals from resettling in Australia before losing office in 2013, federal Labor insists it never intended for people to be languishing on Nauru and Manus Island for this long.
Labor's immigration spokesman Shayne Neumann has challenged Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to sit down with him at a meeting in Brisbane on Monday to discuss resettlement options following leaked incident reports of abuse and self-harm allegations.
"We would not have let people stay in these facilities for this duration... the government seems to have done nothing in the last three years," he told ABC Radio on Monday.
Meanwhile, an Iranian asylum seeker in Australia's detention centre on Nauru has made an emotional plea to be evacuated to Australia.
The woman claims she has been molested by security staff and assaulted by local police but that no action has been taken to protect her.
Australian medical authorities are also warning the woman is at extreme risk of suicide.
In a statement to S-B-S, the Department of Immigration says all allegations have been investigated and are not substantiated.
It was the individual is receiving care commensurate with her needs.
Her lawyer, George Newhouse, says his client is extremely unwell.
