The bill to introduce a Registered Organisations Commission was passed after 2am on Tuesday morning after the government agreed to whistleblower protection laws to secure the support of crossbencher Derryn Hinch and the Nick Xenophon Team.

Senators Nick Xenophon and Derryn Hinch insist they've secured what could be the best whistleblower protections in the world in exchange for their support for the bill to establish a Registered Organisations Commission to oversee unions and their officials.

Senator Nick Xenophon says for the first time whistelblowers will have real protections, the right to civil compensation and remedies that otherwise did not exist.
