Vote counting in the final federal seat of Herbert is expected to be completed by Tuesday.
Over the weekend the last remaining declaration votes were checked against the electoral roll in order to be admitted into the count.
These votes are being counted on Monday in order to complete the two-candidate preferred count.
It's possible this count could be completed on Monday or Tuesday at the latest, the electoral commission told AAP.
Once the two-candidate preferred count is done, there will be a full distribution of preferences.
A recount will be automatically undertaken if the final margin is under 100 votes.
On Monday morning, the Liberal National Party led by 12 votes.
If the coalition's Ewen Jones can retain his north Queensland seat, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will start the new parliament with 77 seats in the lower house.
