Half a tonne of methylamphetamine worth almost $400 million has been discovered in Sydney in a shipping container declared to contain clothing.

The 500kg of the drug ice, with a street value estimated to be $375 million, was uncovered by Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force officials at the Sydney Container Examination Facility last month.

Four men were on Thursday arrested and charged over the seizure, and have been refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Friday.

The arrests were made by Strike Force Fergerson, set up last year to investigate an international criminal network involved in the supply of drugs.

NSW Police will address media in Sydney on Friday morning.
