Almost 600 Australians are being recognised for their contribution to the community in this year's Queen's birthday honours.

The list of Australians being recognised for doing extraordinary things includes New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione, as well as Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens.

Former A-L-P president Warren Mundine is honoured for his role as an indigenous leader.

South Australia's Governor Hieu Van Le is also a recipient.

Mr Van Le fled Vietnam in a boat almost 40 years ago and is now being recognised for helping to build Australia's cultural and economic ties with its Asian neighbours.

They are just some of the high-profile names being honoured, together with hundreds of lesser-known achievers for their work in medicine, charities, sport, education and the arts.
