It shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but most Australians want higher earners and big business to be taxed more to pay off the national debt and raise more funds for government services.

The latest Essential Research survey found almost two-thirds of respondents want an income tax increase for high earners while less than a quarter support the Turnbull government's $50 billion 10-year plan to cut the company tax.

An overwhelming majority (85 per cent) want an end to loopholes that allow companies and wealthy people to minimise their tax by sending money offshore while forcing multinationals (79 per cent) and the wealthy (71 per cent) to pay at least a minimum rate of tax.
