A man has reportedly been apprehended by counter-terrorism police in North Melbourne following a police operation, but authorities have insisted there is no "current or impending threat to the community".

Victoria Police confirmed he counter-terrorism force was called to Queensberry St on Friday afternoon, but declined to provide further details.

Video from the scene appears to show a man dressed in a forensic jumpsuit being led away from St Mary's Church.

A witness said the operation seemed to focus on the church, but reports suggest a second operation took place in a nearby apartment block.

The area has been reopened to the public.
