As Queensland mops up from storms which battered it's southern regions and caused the deaths of two people in a horror car crash on Saturday, NSW continues to be lashed as the State Emergency Service responds to thousands of calls for help.

Residents from the North Narrabeen Caravan Park and the nearby Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation have been evacuated due to fears Narrabeen Lake will flood.

Police say students from the sports academy on the Wakehurst Parkway have been sent to the Narrabeen Surf Club as a precaution.

Intense storms continue to slam Sydney and the Illawarra, a day after the rain and wind belted Queensland and northern NSW.

Emergency services have received about 3600 calls for help and the State Emergency Service NSW has performed 77 flood rescues, mostly involving stranded motorists.

More than 9000 homes and businesses remain without power across Sydney and the Central Coast, but Ausgrid workers are facing strong winds and fallen trees across the network.

More than 500 people have been evacuated from their homes in NSW and flood warnings have been issued for 23 rivers.
