Police have reopened Melbourne’s inner city Flagstaff station, after the busy CBD stop was earlier evacuated following reports of a man with a gun.

All trains bypassed Flagstaff and heavily-armed officers from the Critical Response Team locked the area down about 9am.

The station and at least one train was searched and police later gave the all clear.
It’s understood no weapon was found.
Metro Trains spokesman James Ireland said the evacuation was triggered by reports of a person with a gun.

"There were reports of someone with a firearm," he said.

"The police were called and the train was stopped at Flagstaff.

"All the other trains will run direct to Flinders Street."

Police urged commuters to avoid the station during the operation.

Victoria Police Commissioner Graham Ashton told 3AW, police took the report seriously

“We had a concern that it might be someone with a firearm on a train,” he said.

“They were after that (search) content that there was no firearm on the train.

“A rifle case was sighted originally as part of the report.”

"Police are currently moving passengers away from the area and ask everyone to please avoid the station for now," Victoria Police said in a tweet at the time.

Police were also been spotted outside nearby Flinders St station and on surrounding streets.
